Bezalip (generic name Bezafibrate) is a prescription drug taken orally for the treatment of hyperlipidemia (existence of excess cholesterol in the blood). Normally, the management of cholesterol takes into account things like sustaining low levels of triglycerides (a type of lipid) and low-density lipoproteins (bad cholesterol) and high levels of high-density lipoproteins (good cholesterol).

Mechanism of Action

Bezafibrate falls into the group of drugs called fibrates. It is recommended together with proper diet and exercise plan for treatment of people having high levels of cholesterol. It is particularly helpful in cutting down triglycerides.

Bezalip works by reducing levels of triglyceride and LDL and augmenting HDL, in addition to bringing down fibrinogen (a protein present in blood plasma that boosts blood clotting). Raised fibrinogen levels make bigger the danger of blood clots associated with atherosclerosis (coronary artery disease). Bezafibrate also contracts blood sugar levels in diabetes patients.

Drug Contraindications

Bezalip should not be taken at any cost in the following conditions:

  • If the patient has demonstrated allergic reaction to Bezafibrate or to any of the components of the medicine;
  • If an individual is hypersensitive to other drugs of the ‘fibrate’ group (for instance, clofibrate, fenofibrate, or gemfibrozil);
  • If a woman is nursing her baby;
  • If a woman is pregnant or plans to become pregnant;
  • If an individual suffers from a disorder called Type 1 hyperlipoproteinemia (elevated levels of lipoprotein and cholesterol in the bloodstream); or
  • If someone has serious liver disorder, kidney disorder, or gall bladder disorder.

Dosage & Administration
The most prescribed adult dosage of Bezafibrate is 200 mg taken 2 or 3 times everyday or one 400 mg sustained-release (SR) pill on a daily basis. The pills must be received with abundant fluid, with or following meals. Never chew up the sustained-release pill.
A lot of factors can impact the dosage of a medicinal drug that an individual necessitates, for example body weight, other medical problems, and other medicines. If your general practitioner has prescribed a dose dissimilar from the ones taken by others, stick to it and do not alter the mode that you are receiving Bezalip without seeking advice from your medico.
It is imperative that this drug be consumed accurately as recommended by your healthcare provider. If you forget a dose, try to receive it as quickly as possible and persist with your standard dosing schedule. In case of clashing with the time of your subsequent dose, pass over the forgotten dose and proceed with your planned dosing timetable. Double doses to compensate for a missed one are strongly disallowed.
Risk to Liver Function
Bezalip (Bezafibrate) may impede the functioning of liver, ascertained by liver function tests inside 6 months of commencing treatment and then every year. It is believed that Bezalip is broken down by the metabolic process of the liver; therefore it is not advised with liver disorder excluding fatty liver (commonly marked with elevated cholesterol). Symptoms of liver ailment comprise failing, weariness, irritation in abdomen and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes). Bezalip administered in conjunction with MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitors may also lead to liver impairment.
