Alprostadil is a drug to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in male. This medicine is also used to diagnose some causes of this disorder. This drug is offered under the brand name of Caverject. It also improves blood flow in newborn babies having a certain genetic heart condition. It relaxes blood vessels and muscles in the penis. As a result, an increased blood flows into the penis, causing an erection.


Caverject is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug, in patients who sickle cell anemia or trait, or leukemia, multiple myeloma.

It also should not be administered to patients with anatomical deformation of the penis, for example cavernosal fibrosis, angulation, or Peyronie's disease. Patients who have penile implants should avoid using Caverject.

Caverject is contraindicated in children or newborns and men for whom sexual activity is contraindicated.

How to Use?

The dose of Caverject will differ for each person. It has to be used in right amount, not more or less than the suggested dose.

The alprostadil injection is injected into the side of the penis. You should take your first dose of this medicine in your doctor's office to observe its effects on you. Then you will be guided how to properly give the injection to yourself.

Use Alprostadil only when you want to get an erection. It takes 5 to 20 minutes after using the medicine to cause an erection, and lasts for 30 to 60 minutes.

Go for regular checkups of your penis to ensure about not having any harmful effects.

Caverject Impulse is supplied as a needle and syringe that holds both the powder medication and the sterile liquid. The dose is mechanically mixed when you turn a dial on the end of the syringe. This injectable has to be used once only.

Avoid the mixture of alprostadil injectable until you are ready to receive it. The mixed medication should not be shaken.

Dispose of used needles. Avoid using it more than 3 injections per week. Maintain an interval of at least 24 hours to between injections.

Side Effects

Seek immediate medical notice if you experience any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives or difficulty breathing. Some of these serious side effects may also occur like feeling light-headed, fainting; bruising, bleeding, or swelling where you injected the medication; bleeding from your urethra; severe pain or irritation of your penis or urethra; a painful erection that lasts 4 hours or longer or redness, tenderness, lumps, unusual shape or curving of the erect penis. If any such serious adverse effects occur, stop using this medication. A few less serious side effects may also occur headache, dizziness; pain in your urethra, penis, or testicles; back pain; warmth or numbness of your penis; a rash on the skin of your penis or stuffy nose, cough, cold symptoms.

Your sexual partner may also develop adverse effects such as itching, burning, or irritation of the body areas that come in contact with your penis.

Drug Interaction

Before using alprostadil, you must let your doctor know if you are using any of the drugs like hydralazine (BiDil); nitroglycerin; or a blood thinner such as heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox) or danaparoid (Orgaran).

Other drugs may also have adverse reaction if used with alprostadil. Inform your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter drugs you use.


Use of this drug may cause prolonged erection defined as erection lasting than 4 or 6 hours. To reduce the risks of prolonged erection or priapism, the drug needs to be titrated gradually to the lowest effectual dose. Immediately notify to your prescribing physician, for any erection that perseveres longer than 4 hours. Otherwise it may result in penile tissue damage and permanent loss of potency.
