Desonide is a topical steroid used to reduce the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, redness, and swelling. It is used for the treatment of the inflammation and itching which are caused by a number of skin conditions such as allergic reactions, eczema, and psoriasis.

Under the brand name of Desowen, Desonide comes in form of cream for external use. Each gram of Desowen cream consists of 0.5 mg of desonide, emulsifying wax, isopropyl palmitate, polysorbate 60, potassium sorbate, propyl gallate, propylene glycol, purified water, sodium hydroxide, sorbic acid, stearic acid, and synthetic beeswax.

Drug Indications

Being a low to medium potency corticosteroid, Desowen cream is indicated for the relief of the inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid responsive dermatoses.

Dosage & Administration

The administration of the Desowen cream depends on the severity of the condition of the affected area. It should be applied two or three times daily to the affected areas as a thin film. The cream should be continued as long as the inflammation and itching do not come to an end. But if any remarkable change is not seen in two weeks, then reassessment of diagnosis is advisable.

If Desonide is used in excess, it may lead to an increase in blood sugar. The symptoms of emotional disturbances, high blood pressure, weight gain, and, in women, growth of body and facial hair may be outcomes of overdose. If any of the aforesaid symptoms persist, then immediately seek the help of your doctor.

Side Effects

In general, side effects of Desowen cream have been marked in negligible cases. The possible side effects of this cream may include acne, additional infections, allergic reactions of the skin, burning and stinging, dryness, excessive hair growth, irritation, itching, loss of skin color, prickly heat, rash, scaly skin, skin inflammation around the mouth, skin loss, skin peeling or redness, skin softening, stretch marks, or worsening of the condition. You should immediately seek the assistance of your doctor, so that he may ask you to discontinue the medication if he thinks it right to do.

Symptoms of delayed weight gain, headaches and slowed growth may be seen in children as a result of side effects of consuming this drug. Similarly, symptoms of folliculitis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, secondary infection, skin atrophy, striae, and miliaria have been seen as side effects in cases of occlusive dressings.

Drug Precautions

Too much use of topical corticosteroids like Desowen may lead to reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression due to insufficiency of glucocorticosteroid. The systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids may lead to glucosuria. So, a regular check up should be conducted periodically, by using the ACTH stimulation and urinary free cortisol tests, to evaluate evidence of HPA axis suppression. Patients who are being treated with superpotent corticosteroids should not be treated for more than two weeks at a time. Because the risk of HPA axis suppression is high in such cases, they should be treated for small areas at a time.

Drug Storage

Desonide can be stored at room temperature but should be kept away from direct heat, light and moisture. It should be kept away from reach of children.
