Metronidazole is an antibiotic used for treatment of bacterial infections of the vagina, skin, stomach, respiratory tract and joints. This tablet is not used to treat a vaginal yeast infection. It is available under various brand names such as Protosta, Flagyl 375, Flagyl, and Flagyl ER.

Dosing Instructions

Take Metronidazole orally with or without food. In the hospital, Metronidazole is given intravenously to treat serious infections. Patients having liver disease and abnormal liver function should use lower doses of the drug.

A 750 mg orally for 5-10 days 3 times daily of Metronidazole is given in amebic dysentery. In amebic liver abscess, the dose amount is 500-750 mg orally for 5-10 days3 times daily. For treatment of anaerobic infections, the recommended dose is 7.5 mg/kg orally every 6 hours. It should not go beyond 4 grams daily. In trichomoniasis, a dose of 2 g single dose or 1 g twice is recommended. A dosage of 750 mg (extended release tablets) once daily for 7 days is approved for Bacterial Vaginosis. To treat Giardia, 250 mg orally three times daily for 5 days has been recommended.

This tablet should be taken orally with a full glass of water. You need to take your drug at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often and in more quantity. Do not miss doses or discontinue your drug early. In case you have taken too much of this pills, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

Potential Side Effects

Ask for medical help if you develop signs of an allergic reaction: swelling of your face, hives; difficulty breathing; lips, tongue, or throat. Abstain from continuing the drug and call your doctor at once if you have watery or bloody diarrhea that lasts longer than 3 days. It may cause some less serious side effects like sneezing, cough, runny or stuffy nose; mild diarrhea, nausea, headache; or vomiting; skin rash or itching; stomach pain; white patches in your mouth or throat; or gas, vaginal itching or discharge. Carry on using the tablets and talk to your doctor if they become serious.

Drug Interactions

Many drugs interact with Metronidazole if taken with it. So before using this drug, your doctor must know if you are using any of the following drugs disulfiram (Antabuse), a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin); lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, others), cimetidine (Tagamet); seizure drugs such as phenytoin (Dilantin) or phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton).

Tips to Lessen Drug Interactions & Side Effects

Avoid taking alcohol while being treated with Metronidazole for at least 3 days after you stop taking it. Otherwise it may cause unpleasant side effects like warmth or redness under skin, fast heartbeats, tingly feeling, vomiting and nausea. Examine the labels of any drug or food products before using to ensure they do not contain alcohol. Antibiotic drugs can give rise to diarrhea that may be a sign of a new infection. If you suffer from diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, call your doctor. Never take any drug to stop the diarrhea if your doctor has not told you.

This medication is contraindicated in pregnancy for possible harm effect to the unborn baby. It can make birth control pills less effectual. Use condom for birth control while you are taking Flagyl. It is denied for you if you are breast-feeding a baby. Flagyl is not made for child younger than 8 years old. So avoid administering it to them. You should not take iron supplements, calcium supplements, multivitamins, laxatives or antacids within 2 hours before or after taking Flagyl.
