Introduction

Aceon Tablet is the tert-butylamine salt of perindopril. It is also the ethyl ester of a non-sulfhydryl ACE inhibitor. It has active ingredient of perindopril erbumine, a white, crystalline powder. It is water soluble, also soluble in alcohol and chloroform. It checks a chemical in your blood called angiotensin I from changing into a more powerful form that enhances salt and water retention in the body. This drug is offered in 2 mg, 4 mg and 8 mg strengths for oral use. Each tablet has some inactive ingredients such as colloidal silica (hydrophobic), magnesium stearate, lactose and microcrystalline cellulose. The 4 and 8 mg tablets also have iron oxide.

Drug Indications

Aceon treats high blood pressure; it also reduces the danger of heart attack in people having coronary artery disease. It also increases the blood flow through the circulatory system. It can be taken alone or in mixture with thiazide diuretics.

Dosage & Administration

An initial dose of 4 mg once daily for 2 weeks has been recommended in patients having stable coronary artery disease. The dose may be increased to 8 mg once daily. The dose for elderly patients (>70 yrs) should be low.

To treat uncomplicated hypertension, the initial dose must be 4 mg once a day. The dosage may be increased to 16 mg per day. The common maintenance dose lies between 4 to 8 mg taken as a single daily dose. This drug may be used in two divided doses as well. For the elderly patients, initial daily dosage of the drug is 4 mg daily, given in one or two divided doses.

If perindopril alone is ineffective to control BP, a diuretic may be used. Patients being treated with a diuretic should discontinue it 2 to 3 days before the start of Aceon® Tablets treatment. An early dose of Aceon 2 to 4 mg daily in one or in two divided doses can be taken with diuretic. The dosage may be increased later. Dose will be lower in renal impairment.
