Drug Description

Aldara Cream is an immune response modifier for topical administration. This medication is used for the treatment of actinic keratosis in adult people having normal immune systems. It also treats external genital and perianal warts in people over 12 years of age. Moreover, this drug treats superficial basal cell carcinoma in adults having normal immune systems when surgical methods are not much suitable.


Aldara Cream should not be used in children below 12 years old to treat external genital and perianal warts. It also should be avoided in children beneath 18 years old to treat actinic keratosis or superficial basal cell carcinoma.

Dosage and Administration

Aldara Cream should be applied accurately as approved by the doctor. It is meant for external use only. Do not swallow it or put inside your lips, eyes, or nostrils.

This drug is used for different skin conditions. Use it only on the affected area of your body. This medicine must not be used longer or too much than approved. Otherwise it can cause a severe skin reaction or other side effect.

The suggested dose to treat external genital and perianal warts is generally once a day for 3 days a week. There should be an interval of 48 hours between each dose. You can observe the following schedule:

  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or
  • Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday

Continue the treatment until the warts are totally gone, or up to 16 weeks.

The suggested dose of Aldara Cream for actinic keratosis is generally once a day for 2 days a week, 3 to 4 days apart, for example:

  • Monday and Thursday, or
  • Tuesday and Friday

Carry on the treatment for the full 16 weeks though all actinic keratoses seem to be disappeared, unless your doctor has told you to stop. Ensure that the area to be treated with this drug should not be larger than 2 inches by 2 inches.

Patients with superficial basal cell carcinoma should apply Aldara Cream once a day for 5 days a week. Use the drug to a small part of skin everywhere on the superficial basal cell carcinoma. Make sure the treated area is around the size of your fingertip. Use it for the full 6 weeks, though the disease seems to be gone, unless your doctor has advised you to discontinue.

Side Effects

Some common side effects caused by using Aldara Cream are redness, swelling, itching, skin that becomes hard or thickened, a sore, blister, or ulcer, skin peeling, scabbing and crusting, burning and changes in skin color. Other side effects associated with the use of this drug incorporate back pain, headache, muscle aches, flu-like symptoms, tiredness, swollen lymph nodes, fungal infections and diarrhea. Besides, the above adverse effects, other side effects may also happen by using it. For further information, ask over your doctor.


Before using Aldara Cream, inform your physician, if you used other medicines for actinic keratosis, genital or perianal warts, or superficial basal cell carcinoma. Do not use it along with other medicines. You must

not wrap the treated area with bandages. But you can wear cotton underwear after applying drug on the genital or perianal area. Avoid using sunlamps or tanning beds and sunlight during treatment. Wear sunscreen and put on protective clothing while going outside during day. Avoid sexual contact while being treated for your genital or perianal skin. Wash your hands before and after using the drug.
