Introduction

Generic Alphagan eye drop is an ophthalmic solution containing a relatively selective alpha-2 adrenergic agonist used to treat increased pressure in the eye which results from either glaucoma or a condition called ocular hypertension. Brimonidine Tartrate is a powder with off-white to pale yellow color and is soluble in water and in the product vehicle at pH 7.7. The inactive ingredients of the Brimonidine Tartrate Eye Drops are sodium carboxymethylcellulose, sodium borate, boric acid, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride along with purite 0.005% (0.05mg/mL) which acts as a preservative and purified water with hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide for adjusting the pH.

Drug Indications

Generic Alphagan eye drop is indicated for the lowering of the internal pressure in the eyes of the patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Open-angle glaucoma is a condition in which the aqueous fluid which flows from the anterior chamber of the eye fails to get into the drainage canals through the trabecular meshwork which is a filtration system and causes pressure to build up in the eye damaging the optic nerve and impairing vision.

Mechanism of Action

As an alpha adrenergic receptor agonist, Generic Alphagan eye drop starts working after two hours from the instilling of the ophthalmic solution. Brimonidine Tartrate exerts a hypotensive effect by reducing aqueous humor production and increasing uveoscleral outflow.

Dosage & Administration

You must follow the directions of your doctor given for using the ophthalmic solution. If you are using other medications for your eyes, then you must instill these eye drops after five minutes of using them. Contact lenses should be removed before instilling the eye drops and can again be worn only after 15 minutes of using the eye drops. Because the hole of the dispenser has been designed to give the right dose, never enlarge it. Do not wash the dispenser tip and avoid its contamination.

Hands should be properly washed before using the eye drops. Make a pocket of your eye by gently pulling your lower eyelid down after tilting your head back. Turn the bottle upside down and hold it placing your finger at the right position placing your thumb or index finger on the finger push area and press the bottle lightly. Steps can be repeated for the other eye if required.

The recommended normal dosage of Generic Alphagan is one drop which should administered thrice in a day at intervals of 8 hours. It can be used along with other topical ophthalmic product but there should be a gap of 5 minutes in between their administration.

Side Effects

Side effects of any drug cannot be anticipated, so experiencing of any unusual health symptoms should be immediately reported to your doctor. The commonly seen side effects of Brimonidine Tartrate Eye Drops are allergic conjunctivitis, conjunctival hyperemia, and eye pruritus. Symptoms of burning sensation, conjunctival folliculosis, hypertension, ocular allergic reaction, oral dryness, and visual disturbance have been experienced by 5-9% patients.

Drug Interactions

Generic Alphagan interacts with CNS depressants, like anesthetics, sedatives, opiates, barbiturates and alcohols, to give additive effect leading to reducing pulse and blood pressure. Patients taking tricyclic antidepressants should be carefully monitored as their use with the ophthalmic solution may affect the metabolism.

Drug Contraindications

Brimonidine Tartrate is contraindicated in patients who have developed hypersensitivity to Generic Alphagan ophthalmic solution or any component of this ophthalmic solution. Patients who are being administered with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor therapy should not use it.
