Ramipril is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It decreases certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly and the heart can pump more efficiently.

Do not take ramipril if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking ramipril, call your doctor immediately.

The dose may be increased to 5 mg, once a day for the next 3 weeks. Depending on the patients response the dose may be increased to 10 mg, once a day.

To treat hypertension, the recommended early dose is 2.5 mg once a day for patients not using a diuretic. The maximum dose should not go beyond 20 mg per day which may be taken as a single dose or in two equally divided doses.

To treat post-infarction in patients having congestive failure, an initial dose of Altace 2.5 mg twice daily (5 mg per day) has been recommended. A patient who is hypotensive can take 1.25 mg twice daily. The dose may be increased to 5 mg twice daily after one week.

To treat hypertension in patients having renal impairment, an initial dose of 1.25 mg once daily has been recommended. The maximum total daily dose should not surpass 5 mg.
