Introduction

AVAPRO (irbesartan) belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers and is similar to losartan (Cozaar) and valsartan (Diovan). It has the active ingredient of irbesartan which is a non-peptide compound. It also contains inactive ingredients such as lactose, pregelatinized starch, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, silicon dioxide, poloxamer 188 and magnesium stearate.

Indication

Irbesartan is used to for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) and to help protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes.

Dosage and Administration

AVAPRO may be used with other antihypertensive agents and with or without food.

An early dose of 150 mg once daily is recommended. Patients who need further decrease in blood pressure can be given to 300 mg once daily.

If this drug alone is not effective, you can add a low dose of a diuretic.

Nephropathy in Type 2 Diabetic Patients can use maintenance dose is 300 mg once daily.

Volume- and Salt-Depleted Patients (eg, patients treated vigorously with diuretics or on hemodialysis) can take a lower preliminary dose of AVAPRO (irbesartan) (75 mg).

Overdose

In case you have consumed overdose, make contact with your local poison control center without delay.

Missed Dose

If you happen to miss a dosage, take it immediately you remember. But you should not take double dose to make up the missed dose.

Side Effects

Side effects are exceptional. If you grow any or change in intensity, notify your doctor immediate possible. Some adverse effects that can be considered are dizziness, cough, and dizziness upon standing, headache, fatigue, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, and weakness. Serious are wheezing, skin rash, itching, blisters or peeling of the skin, difficulty breathing or swallowing and swelling of the head or neck.

Drug Interactions

No important drug interactions have been found with irbesartan. A few known drugs that can cause serious interaction are potassium supplements, diuretics, such as torsemide (Demadex®), hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide (Lasix®), potassium-sparing diuretics, such as triamterene (Dyrenium®), spironolactone (Aldactone®), and amiloride (Midamore®) and others.

Warning

It may result in serious fetal harm (possibly death) if used during the last six months of pregnancy. If you turn out to be pregnant or assume you may be pregnant, consult your doctor straight away.

Precautions

Before using Avapro, check with your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, high blood levels of potassium, severe dehydration (and loss of electrolytes such as sodium), heart problems, diabetes (poorly controlled), any allergies (especially to ACE inhibitors such as captopril, lisinopril).

Avoid sudden stop using Avapro without first asking your doctor.

Before going for surgery, notify your doctor or dentist that you are taking this drug.

It may make you feel dizziness or drowsiness; apply caution doing activities needing alertness. Do not use alcoholic beverages. This drug should not be used during pregnancy.

To lessen risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, rise slowly when rising from a seated or lying position.

Use caution when administering this drug in the elderly as they may be more responsive to the effects of the drug, particularly the dizziness effect.

Storage

Keep the medication at room temperature, 15-30°C (59-86°F).
