Azelex® Cream is applied to treat mild to moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris. The generic name of this drug is azelaic acid.


This medication should not be used by people who have shown allergic reaction to any of its constituents in the past.

Dosage and Administration

Use this topical drug as you are instructed by your doctor. Read the tag on the medication for correct dosage information.

Before you apply Azelex Cream, clean the acne affected area with warm water and soap and let it dry. Apply a thin film of medication on the acne and smoothly massage it to evenly distribute medicine. Let the medication dry.

The recommended dose of the drug is twice daily, in the morning and evening.

Wash down your hands right away before and after applying the cream.

Do not wrap the treated area with gauze or a bandage if your doctor has not directed you to do accordingly.

Use this medication for the full course though your condition seems to be improved.

If you fail to use it regularly and miss a dosage of Azelex Cream, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is approximately time for your subsequent dosage, leave out the missed dose and return to your usual dosing agenda.

Side effects

Side effects occur by using any medicine. But this drug usually causes less or mild adverse effects. Seek advice from your physician if you undergo any common adverse such as: stinging, dryness; itching, temporary burning, redness, or tingling at the treated site.

Patient must immediately contact his doctor if any harsh side effects arise: peeling; severe allergic reactions; change in skin color; skin irritation, or inflammation of skin.

Besides, the above adverse reactions, other effects will possibly occur. If you want to know more about these side effects, make contact with your health care professional.

Drug Interaction

There are some drugs that may cause harsh adverse effects if used with other drugs. Similarly, Azelex Cream may also cause adverse effects by using with several drugs. However, as a little Azelex Cream is absorbed into the blood, it may rarely cause such interaction.

Check with your doctor if this drug interacts with other medications that you are taking. Let your health care professional know before you begin, stop, or modify the dosage of any medication.


Your doctor may not recommend you this drug if you have some medical conditions as they may cause harmful effects. Hence, you are needed to acquaint your doctor or pharmacist with any medical conditions you have, mainly: a history of asthma or cold sores and allergies to foods, medicines, or other materials.

Azelex Cream may show effect after some weeks. If your condition does not improve within 4 weeks or if they worsen, seek advice from your doctor. If you use it excessively, your condition may deteriorate.

This drug is for external application only. Do not get Azelex Cream into your nose, eyes, or mouth. If such happens by mistake, wash the area instantly with ample water. If you feel irritation persists, make contact with your doctor.

Patients having dark complexions are needed to be checked for early symptoms of hypopigmentation.

Contact your doctor before applying any other medications or cleansers on your skin.

Use it with great care in children below than 12 years old, pregnant and breast feeding women.
