Introduction

Generic Bactrim is prescribed for persons suffering from different bacterial infections. It is mainly composed of Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole. Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole are antibiotics which are used for treating ear infections, urinary tract infections, bronchitis, traveler's diarrhea, and pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Trimethoprim is also used to treat bladder infection. The other inactive ingredients of Bactrim tablets are docusate sodium 85%, sodium benzoate 15%, sodium starch glycolate, magnesium stearate and pregelatinized starch.

Drug Indications

Generic Bactrim tablets are indicated for treatment of urinary tract infections, acute otitis media, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults, shigellosis, pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and traveler's diarrhea in adults.

Dosage & Administration

For pneumocystis pneumonia, the usual adult dosage is of 15 to 20 mg/kg/day. It may be divided into 3 to 4 equal doses and should be administered at every 6 to 8 hours. The medication should be continued for 14 to 21 days.

For urinary tract infection, the normal adult dosage is of 2 tablets per day and should be taken at intervals of 12 hours for consecutive 10 to 14 days. For children with urinary tract infections or acute otitis media, the recommended dose is of 40 mg/kg sulfamethoxazole and 8 mg/kg Trimethoprim per 24 hours. It should be given in two divided doses at every 12 hours for 10 days.

For shigellosis, the normal dosage is of 2 tablets per day and should be taken for consecutive 10 to 14 days at intervals of 12 hours. For children with shigellosis, the recommended dose is of 40 mg/kg sulfamethoxazole and 8 mg/kg Trimethoprim per 24 hours. It should be given in two divided doses at every 12 hours for 10 days.

For acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults, the normal dosage is of 2 tablets per day. These tablets should be taken for consecutive 10 to 14 days at intervals of 12 hours.

For prophylaxis, the recommended dosage in adults is 1 DS (double strength) tablet daily or 2 Bactrim tablets per day. The recommended dosage for children is 750 mg/m2/day sulfamethoxazole with 150 mg/m2/day Trimethoprim given orally. It should be administered in equally divided doses twice a day for 3 consecutive days per week.

For traveler's diarrhea in adults, the recommended adult dosage is of 1DS (double strength) tablet or 2 tablets. It should be administered at every 12 hours. The medication should be continued for 5 consecutive days.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects of Bactrim tablets are associated with gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea, vomiting, anorexia and allergic skin reactions like rash and urticaria.

Other side effects may include agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, neutropenia, hemolytic anemia, megaloblastic anemia, hypoprothrombinemia, methemoglobinemia, eosinophilia, aseptic meningitis, convulsions, peripheral neuritis, ataxia, vertigo, tinnitus, headache, cough, shortness of breath and pulmonary infiltrates.

Drug Interactions

Bactrim tablets are interactive with methotrexate, phenytoin, indomethacin and tricyclic antidepressants. So, usage of these drugs should either be avoided or should be taken only after consulting a doctor. An adjustment of dosages may be required.

Storage Instructions

Bactrim tablets can be stored at room temperature. These should not be exposed to direct heat and light. Always keep them away from the reach of children and pet.
