Active ingredient: Dimenhydrinate

Introduction:

Generic Dramamine is a drug meant for treatment of motion sickness and vertigo. Being an antihistamine and anticholinergic, it works in the brain to decrease the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Under the brand name of Generic Dramamine, it is available for oral administration in form of tablets having strength of 50mg per tablet. Each of its tablets has dibasic calcium phosphate, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, starch and sucrose as inactive ingredients.

Indication:

Generic Dramamine tablets are indicated for control of severe nausea and vomiting and for the treatment of patients suffering from schizophrenia. Nausea is the urge to vomit and may be caused by systemic illnesses, such as influenza, medications, pain, and inner ear disease. Schizophrenia is a brain disease characterized by the symptoms of loss of personality (flat affect), agitation, catatonia, confusion, psychosis, unusual behavior, and withdrawal.

Mechanism of Action:

Generic Dramamine acts as a protective agent against nebulized histamine and intravenously injected histamine in guinea pigs. It blocks the vasodepressor response to histamine and performs a slight blocking action against acetylcholine which is a chemical in neurons (nerve cells) that acts as a neurotransmitter and carries information across the synaptic cleft and thus checks the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.

When Not To Use This Drug:

The Dimenhydrinate tablets should not be used by patients who have developed any kind of allergy towards Dimenhydrinate or any other component of the drug. One who is being administered with sodium oxybate (GHB) should not be given these tablets. The consumption of these tablets should be avoided if you are currently being administered with a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor or were administered with it within the past 14 days. Dimenhydrinate is excreted through milk, so breast feeding mothers should not be administered with these tablets.

Dosage And Administration:

The adult dosage for individuals for controlling severe nausea and vomiting is 15 mg to 30 mg per day. The dosage should be given in divided doses of three or four. Only in resistant cases, a dose of 40 mg may be given.

The adult dosage for psychiatric disorders depends on the kind of disorder. If the treatment is being given for non-psychotic anxiety, the normal dosage is of 15-20 mg per day and should be given in divided doses. The dosage should not exceed 20mg per day and should not be prescribed for a period longer than 12 weeks. A usual dosage 15-30 mg per day may be given to the adults suffering from psychotic disorders including schizophrenia and are in relatively mild conditions. But the dosage should be administered in divided doses and should not be continued for a longer period than as directed by the physician.

Adults suffering from moderate to severe conditions may be administered with a dosage of 30-40 mg per day and may gradually increase it to 50-75 mg per day. The increase in doses should be in small amounts and at intervals of two to three days.

Overdose

In case you have used overdose, make contact with your local poison control center without delay.

Missed Dose

If you happen to miss any dosage, take it immediately you remember. But you should not take double dose to make up the missed dose.
