Known as a selective estrogen receptor modulator, Raloxifene is available in tablet form under the brand name of Generic Evista.

Generic Evista tablets are indicated for the treatment of postmenopausal women suffering from osteoporosis. Postmenopausal women with osteoporosis may be administered with these tablets for reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer.

Mechanism Of Action:

After menopause, the fall in estrogen levels lead to increases in bone resorption and accelerated bone loss. Because the compensatory increase in bone formation is inadequate to offset resorptive losses, bone is rapidly lost. Raloxifene binds to estrogen receptors resulting in activation of certain estrogenic pathways and blockade of others. Decreasing resorption of bone and reducing biochemical markers of bone turnover to the premenopausal range, Generic Evista tablets affect bones to manifest reductions in the serum and urine levels of bone turnover markers, decreases in bone resorption based on radiocalcium kinetics studies, increases in bone mineral density(BMD), and decreases in incidence of fractures.

Dosage and administration:

The Generic Evista tablets are available in strength of 60mg per tablet. The recommended dosage is of 60mg per day or one tablet daily. You may take this tablet with food or without food. Because the optimum period of the treatment is not known, so it is advised to consult your doctor before discontinuing with these tablets.

Recommendations for Calcium and Vitamin D Supplementation:

An average of 1500 mg/day of elemental calcium is required by postmenopausal women, so supplemental calcium and/or vitamin D should be added to the diet if daily intake is inadequate. Patients over the age of 70 years, patients being nursed at home, or chronically ill may need additional vitamin D supplements, as the recommended intake of vitamin D is 400-800 IU daily, which they may not be obtaining from diets. Higher doses of vitamin D supplementation and measurement of 25-hydroxyvitamin D should be considered in case of patients with gastrointestinal malabsorption syndromes.

Side Effects:

The most common side effects of Generic Evista tablets are hot flashes, increased sweating, joint aches and leg cramps. Other side effects may include unexplained bleeding, swelling of the hands, arms, legs or feet, slurred speech, difficulty breathing, flu-like symptoms, breast pain, tenderness, swelling, lump or discharge, tightness in the chest, abnormal vaginal bleeding, leg or calf pain, warmth, or swelling, confusion and blurred vision, loss of vision, or other vision changes. The experiencing of any of the above said symptoms should be immediately reported to the doctor.

Drug Interactions:

Generic Evista tablets, containing raloxifene, are interactive with cholestyramine and warfarin and should not be concomitantly administered along with these drugs. Drugs like diazepam, diazoxide, and lidocaine should be carefully administered with these tablets.

Storage and Handling:

These tablets should be stored at controlled room temperature ranging from20º to 25ºC (68º to 77ºF). Keep away from the reach of children and pets.
