Griseofulvin is a prescription drug sold under the US trade name Grispeg. It is used for the treatment of a variety of infections caused by fungus, for example those of the fingernails skin and hair. The medicinal drug is applied to people whose infections have not reacted with success to medications used topically such as lotions and ointments.

Mechanism of Action

Griseofulvin comes in of form tablets. Having high affinity for diseased tissue, it is deposited in the keratin precursor cells. It tightly binds itself with keratin becoming high resistant to fungal invasions.

Drug Indications

Griseofulvin is used for treatment of various infections like jock itch, tinea corporis, ring worm and onychomycosis. These infections are caused by different type of fungus. So, before taking any medicine for the treatment of these infections, medical tests should be conducted to find the fungi responsible for the infection.

Dosage & Administration

The dosage of generic Grispeg depends on the type of infection caused and the kind of fungi which caused the infection.

For adults suffering from tinea corporis, tinea cruris, and tinea capitis, the daily normal dose should be 375 mg. But for the patients with severe infections like tinea pedis and tinea unguium, it may be given a daily dose of 750 mg divided in two. For pediatric patients the approximate daily dose is of 3.3 mg per pound of body weight. Children younger than 2 years should not be administered with this drug.

Side Effects

The adverse reactions of Grispeg tablets are mostly of hypersensitivity kind. They may be skin rashes, urticaria and erythema multiform-like drug reactions. In rare cases, angioneurotic edema is found as a side effect to the consumption of Grispeg tablets. It is advisable either to give up the medicine wholly or to take a reduced dose. Its other side effects may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, mental confusion, and impairment of performance of routine activities. High dosage or long duration of the therapy or both may lead to granulocytopenia.

Drug Precautions

Periodic check ups of renal, hepatic and hematopoietic system functions should be conducted. It is suspected to have cross-sensitivity with penicillin. Patients should not be allowed exposure to intense natural or artificial sunlight.

Anticoagulants like warfarin-type get affected by the Griseofulvin. So, patients consuming these drugs are required to adjust their dosages accordingly while being under treatment and after that also.

If Grispeg tablets are taken along with barbiturates, then a dosage adjustment may be required as barbiturates depress Griseofulvin activity. There are chances for alcohol to produce the effects of tachycardia and flush, if consumed with Griseofulvin. So, it should be avoided.

Drug Contradictions

The Grispeg tablets should not be prescribed to pregnant women, as there are chances of its causing harm to the fetus. Patients suffering from porphyria or hepatocellular failure should not be prescribed this drug. And patients having hypersensitivity to Griseofulvin should never be administered with this drug.


Generic Grispeg tablets should be stored in a cool, dry place. Extra care should be taken for not to let it come in contact with moisture. It should be kept away from children.
