Hydergine is a medicine that is given for the treatment of dementia or other age-related cognitive symptoms. Each form contains ergoloid mesylates, USP like dihydroergocornine mesylate 0.333 mg, dihydroergocristine mesylate 0.333mg, and dihydroergocryptine (dihydro-alpha-ergocryptine and dihydro-beta-ergocryptine in the proportion of 2:1) mesylate 0.333 mg, representing a total of 1 mg. This medicine may offer benefit to some patients if it takes at doses of 4.5 to 9.0 mg per day.

The inactive ingredients of an oral tablet are lactose, povidone, starch, stearic acid, and talc. The inactive ingredients of liquid capsule are ascorbic acid, gelatin, methylparaben, polyethylene glycol, propylparaben, propylene glycol, sorbitol, and titanium dioxide.


Hydergine is indicated for use as an adjunct therapy in patients having dementia, or other age-related symptoms. It helps in blood supply and oxygen to the brain. In addition, it enhances memory, learning, and recall of the mind. Thus, help to combat the symptoms that dementia and other medical factors that damage the memory centers of the brain can produce.


Hydergine is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to ergot preparations, or psychosis. So, if you are under any medications let your doctor knows all your prescriptions and non prescriptions so that he will recommend for the best result.

Mechanism of Action:

Hydergine acts successfully by decreasing vascular tone and slowing the rate of the heart and block alpha-receptors. It acts effectively on neuronal cell thereby improving oxygen uptake and cerebral metabolism and normalizing depressed neurotransmitter levels.

Dosage and Administration:

It is given in the form of capsules or tablets and it is to be consumed by mouth orally, or in a solution that is taken orally. The tablets should not be chewed or swallowed, but thoroughly dissolved under the tongue.

The recommended dose is 1 to 2 milligrams three times a day and you should not eat, drink, or smoke while this medicine is in your mouth. However, you should be under doctor advice because the adverse reaction is little bit high.

Take this medicine regularly, but do not overdose or miss any doses. If you miss a dose take it whenever recalls, but if it is the time for another dose skip it. Follow your regular dosing schedule and follow your doctor's instructions.

Some of the side effects of Hydergine are lightheaded feeling or dizziness, skin rash, hives, slowed pulse, general feelings of drowsiness. You may also experience other side effects like blurred vision or impaired vision, flushed skin, or reddened skin, loss of appetite, nausea, unexplained vomiting, stuffy nose, stomach pain, etc. If these happen when you are in medication seek your doctor immediately. It should be stored at room temperature and in a very tightly closed container. Be sure that children could not reach the area where you keep the medicine.
