Introduction

Indapamide, being a diuretic, works by causing the kidneys to eliminate large amounts of water and salts. People with congestive heart failure are treated with this drug for treating fluid retention which is caused by absorbing too much salt. Unlike, other thiazides, Indapamide does not possess the thiazide ring system and contains only one sulfonamide group with its molecule containing both a polar sulfamoyl chlorobenzamide moiety and a lipid-soluble methylindoline moiety. Containing microcrystalline cellulose, coloring agent, corn starch, pregelatinized starch, hypromellose, lactose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, and talc as inactive ingredients, the Indapamide tablets are available under the brand name of Generic Lozol.

Indication

Generic Lozol tablets are indicated for the treatment of hypertension and salt and fluid retention associated with congestive heart failure. These tablets may also be used in combination with other antihypertensive drugs for treating hypertension.

Dosage and Administration

Adults with hypertention should be given an initial dosage of 1.25 mg as a single daily dose which should be taken in the morning. After four weeks of period, if any satisfactory response is not received, the dosage may be increased to 2.5mg per day and should be taken as a single dose and again, if after an interval of 4 weeks from this, results seen are not satisfactory, the dosage may be raised to 5 mg per day.

Adults suffering from edema of congestive heart failure should be administered with an initial dosage of 2.5 mg as a single daily dose which should be taken in the morning. The daily doses may be increased to 5mg per day in order to obtain satisfactory results. The dose should be taken as a single dose in the morning.

If Generic Lozol tablets fail to obtain the desired result alone, they should be given with other antihypertensive drugs but careful monitoring of blood pressure should be done. But in no case, the daily doses should exceed 5mg per day.

Side Effects

Most of the side effects of Generic Lozol tablets are mild and transient and are associated with central nervous system/neuromuscular, gastrointestinal system, cardiovascular system, genitourinary system and dermatologic hypersensitivity. The side effects associated with central nervous system/neuromuscular are nervousness, tension, anxiety, irritability, or agitation, muscle cramps or spasm, or numbness of the extremities, fatigue, weakness, loss of energy, lethargy, tiredness, or malaise, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, vertigo, insomnia and blurred vision. The side effects associated with gastrointestinal system are constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastric irritation, abdominal pain or cramps and anorexia. The side effects, associated with cardiovascular system and genitourinary system, are orthostatic hypotension, premature ventricular contractions, irregular heart beat, palpitations and frequency of urination, nocturia, polyuria, respectively. Rash, hives, pruritus and vasculitis are side effects of this drug associated with dermatologic and hypersensitivity.

Drug Interaction

Generic Lozol tablets may interact with other antihypertensive drugs and may accelerate their actions. In the post-sympathectomized patients, the antihypertensive effect of the drug may be increased, so monitoring of blood pressure is advisable. Because Indapamide is a thiazide, it is likely to decrease arterial responsiveness to norepinephrine but it may not preclude effectiveness of the pressor agent for therapeutic use. So while taking these tablets along with the above mentioned drugs, you must talk to your doctor about the same.

Drug Contradiction

The consumption of these tablets is contradicted with patients of anuria and persons having hypersensitivity towards Indapamide or any other component of the drug.

Storage

These tablets can be stored at room temperature in tightly closed containers, away from the reach of children. Avoid contact with excessive heat and direct light.
