Drug Description

Natamycin is an antifungal drug. The ophthalmic form of natamycin is applied on the eye for the treatment of fungal infections of the eyes. This drug is also used for other purposes not described in this medicine guide.


Natamycin ophthalmic is contraindicated in patients with a bacterial or viral infection in eye since it treats fungal infections only. It should not be applied during pregnancy and lactation without first consulting with your doctor.

Dosage and Administration

Adult patient can apply 1 or 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 hours if the infection is not serious. If the infection is serious, 2 drops can be applied into the eye(s) every hour until it shows improvement. Then the dose should be reduced gradually before you discontinue using it altogether. Children may need a reduced dose. The doctor can determine the right dose for the child. Before applying this eye drops, the patient should wash the hands comprehensively. Then the patient should softly drag the lower eyelid down to form a pocket between the eye and eyelid. Then the bottle should be braced on the bridge of your nose or the forehead. The patient should take caution that the applicator tip doesn't touch your eye or any other surface. Tilt your head back and press the medicine into the eye. After that the patient should close his/her eyes quietly and should continue closing it for 1 to 2 minutes. If you have been told to use more than one drop in the same eye or drops in both eyes, perform again the same process with about 5 minutes gap between drops. The patient should not rinse the dropper. Before using another eye drop, it is good to wait 5 to 10 minutes before using it.

Side Effects

Side effects are rare with this drug. However it is advised that if any such effects develop or change in intensity, it is wise to notify the doctor immediately possible. Only the physician should decide if the patient should continue taking it or not. A few such side effects can comprise abnormal redness of eye tissue, lid itching, allergic reactions and lid swelling.

Drug Interactions

Drug interaction is possible if this eye or ear drop is used with other such medications. Using any kind of other prescription antibiotics for your eyes can cause serious interaction. Hence it is advised to consult your doctor before using Natacyn. Using this eye drop with certain other antibiotics in your system will lead to an overdose.

Apart from the above drug, other drugs may also cause interaction if used with this medication. Hence it is advised to consult the doctor to get informed about other drugs.


If Natacyn causes an allergic reaction, put an end to its use and notify your doctor.

If this drug is used very often or for a longer period, it may increase the growth of bacteria that do not act in response to Natacyn. As a result a secondary infection will occur.

The effects of this eye/ear drops during pregnancy is unknown. Hence the patient must inform his doctor if she gets pregnant. There are chances that it may appear in breast milk. Hence the patient should stop breastfeeding until the treatment with Natacyn is completed.


Store the drug at room temperature, away from heat, or in the refrigerator. Do not let it freeze.
