Introduction

Generic Nimodipine is a medication applied for preventing brain damage attributable to decreased blood flow to the brain due to aneurysm. It increases the blood flow to injured brain tissue. This medicine is available as Nimotop when showed with your doctor's recommendation.

Nimodipine Dosing Information

A 60 mg orally at every 4 hours should be given to adult for subarachnoid hemorrhage. Start the treatment within 96 hours of the event and carry on for 21 days. In case of ischemic stroke, the usual adult dose is 30 mg orally every 6 hours. You need to start the treatment within 24 hours of the event and carry on for 28 days. If it is being applied for migraine prophylaxis, a 30 mg orally every 6 hours can be considered for adult.

Before Taking Nimodipine

It is most essential to tell your doctor about your medical conditions before taking Nimotop (Nimodipine). You must inform your doctor if you have high blood pressure for which you take medication; or low blood pressure; liver disease; or a history of heart problems such as a slow heart rate, congestive heart failure, or heart attack. For the above conditions, your doctor may advise a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.

Drug Administration

Use Nimotop as you are told by your doctor. For good results, the drug can be taken on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. The patient must not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking Nimotop. If you miss a dose, take the elapsed dose as you memorize. You should not take the drug if it is almost time for your next dose. Here, you can skip the one you missed and follow your regular schedule.

Potential Adverse Effects

These tablets may cause some unwanted effects. These adverse effects include unusual tiredness, wheezing, tightness in chest, swelling, decreased blood pressure, slow or irregular heartbeat, chest pain or discomfort, difficult or labored breathing, shortness of breath, fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse rate, lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting. These side effects appear rarely. Seek advice from your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur. It is not that all of these side effects may occur, but if they occur, seek medical help.

Drug Precautions

There are chances of harm to the unborn baby by using Nimotop (Nimodipine) in pregnancy. Ask your doctor if you get pregnant. It has to be avoided during breastfeeding a baby. Use of these tablets may make you unable to drive or operate machinery safely. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know what effects it has on you.

The drug should not be suddenly discontinued or it may lead to a dangerous increase in blood pressure. You should gradually reduce the dose or you may get withdrawal symptoms. Seek advice from your physician. If you need local or general anesthesia, tell your physician you are taking this medication. Abstain from drinking alcohol while taking the tablets.
