Introduction

Generic Plendil is a calcium channel blocker. It contains the active ingredient, Felodipine which is a dihydropyridine derivative. This substance is a little yellowish, crystalline powder solvable in dichloromethane and ethanol. Plendil Tablets are the extended release form of felodipine. These tablets are offered with different dose strength having 2.5 mg, 5 mg, or 10 mg of felodipine for oral use. The common inactive ingredients in these tablets are cellulose, FD&C Blue 2, lactose, sodium stearyl fumarate, yellow iron oxide, titanium dioxide, and other ingredients.

Drug Indications

Generic Plendil is a medication approved for the treatment of high blood pressure, alone or with other medications. This drug may be applied for other purposes not mentioned here. It blocks the normal act of calcium on the heart and blood vessels. It helps blood vessels to calm down, the heart to beat with less compel and drain less blood. It also makes the heart to beat more gradually and repeatedly.

Dosage and Administration

An initial dose of 5 mg is recommended once a day. The dosage may be lessened to 2.5 mg or raised to 10 mg once a day depending on the patient's reaction. Dosage can be adjusted generally at intervals after 2 weeks. The dosage should not be more than 10 mg once daily.

Take it regularly either without food or with a light meal. It must be swallowed whole.

Patients over 65 years of age should start a low end of the dosing range (2.5 mg daily).

Contraindications

These tablets are contraindicated in patients with allergic reaction to any ingredient in Plendil. It also should not be administered to patient with a history of low blood pressure.

Drug Interactions

There are a lot of drugs that should not be used while being treated with Plendil. Otherwise it may cause serious health hazardous. Before using these drugs with Felodipine, it is vital to notify your doctor about them. A few of such drugs are mentioned here: Macrolide immunosuppressives (eg, tacrolimus), Barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), carbamazepine, Azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), or erythromycin or cimetidine.

Side Effects

Like any other medications, this drug may create adverse effects, however many people show no, or negligible side effects. Some of the most common side effects caused by this drug are diarrhea; flushing; dizziness; headache; nausea; mild swelling of gums; and weakness.

If you experience any serious side effects as follows, ask for medical help with more ado:

severe allergic reactions (rash; difficulty breathing; hives; tightness in the chest; swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or tongue); chest pain; breathing problems; enlarged breasts in men; heart problems; fast or irregular heartbeat; impotence; swelling of the ankles or hands and lightheadedness and fainting.

Drug Precautions

Before start taking Felodipine, patient needs to acquaint his doctor about any medical conditions he has especially breathing problems, heart problems, or a slow heartbeat. These medical conditions may disqualify you to use this drug. Other condition may also prohibit you to use these tablets such as pregnancy, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding, use of any prescribed or non-prescribed drug, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement, allergies to drugs, foods, or other stuffs.

Felodipine may cause reflex tachycardia which in vulnerable patients may lead to sudden angina pectoris. Apply the drug with care, when using Plendil in patients with compromised ventricular function, heart failure, mostly in blend with a beta blocker. Patients with impaired liver function should start a lower dose of 2.5 mg once a day. These patients must check blood pressure closely during dosage adjustment of Plendil.
