Amantadine belongs to a group of drugs called antiviral drugs. It chunks the events of viruses in your body. It is marketed under the brand name Generic Symmetrel.


Amantadine is applied for the treatment and prevention of influenza A (a viral infection). It is also used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and "Parkinson-like" symptoms for example stiffness and shaking.


It should not be used in patients having allergic to amantadine, or if you have used a nasal flu vaccine (FluMist) within the past 14 days.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Symmetrel (Amantadine Hydrochloride, USP) may need reduction in patients with congestive heart failure, peripheral edema, orthostatic hypotension, or impaired renal function.

The following dosage information is usual information. Consult with doctor for proper dosages before using it. A daily dosage of Symmetrel is 200 mg; two 100 mg tablets (or four teaspoonfuls of syrup) have been recommended for adult as a single daily dose to treat prophylaxis and influenza A virus illness.

Patients 65 years of age or older, should take daily dosage of 100 mg. For pediatric patients, from 1 yr.-9 yrs. of age, the total daily dose can be determined based on of 2 to 4 mg/lb/day (4.4 to 8.8 mg/kg/day). It should not exceed 150 mg per day.

Children from 9 yrs.-12 yrs. of age can take total daily dose of 200 mg given as one tablet of 100 mg twice a day.

To treat Parkinsonism, a usual dose of 100 mg twice a day has been prescribed when used alone.

Patients with serious related medical illnesses or who are taking high doses of other antiparkinson drugs should take initial dose of 100 mg daily.

Symmetrel can be used with levodopa concurrently for rapid therapeutic benefits.

Adult patient can take 100 mg twice a day as usual dose for Drug-Induced Extrapyramidal Reactions.

Dosage for Impaired Renal Function

The dosage adjustment is different depending upon creatinine clearance.


Take this drug just as it was approved for you. Pursue the information on your prescription label. You should use this drug with a full glass of water.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of this capsule are loss of balance, feeling nervous; nausea, constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite; dizziness, headache; drowsiness, dry mouth, dry nose. Rare yet more severe side effects of these tablets are feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion; swelling, feeling depressed, rapid weight gain; aggressive; hallucinations, less urinating; high fever, rapid breathing, confusion, sweating, stiff muscles, fast or uneven heartbeats, tremor (uncontrolled shaking).

Drug Interactions

Amantadine if taken with certain other drugs may lead to adverse reaction. It may enhance or decrease the effects of either drug. So it is advised to inform your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription drugs you are using, quinine (Qualaquin); atropine (Sal-Tropine, Atreza, and others); glycopyrrolate (Robinul); dicyclomine (Bentyl); mepenzolate (Cantil); hyoscyamine (Levsin, Levbid, Nulev, Anaspaz, and others); methscopolamine (Pamine); propantheline (Pro-Banthine).


You must not use FluMist nasal influenza "live vaccine" while on treatment with amantadine within at least 48 hours. Before taking THIS DRUG, acquaint with your doctor if you have used a nasal flu vaccine within the past 14 days. It can lead to side effects such as vision impairment. Be cautious if you drive or do anything that requires alertness.

You must also inform your physician if you have epilepsy or other seizure disorder; eczema; congestive heart failure; liver disease; kidney disease; low blood pressure or fainting; glaucoma; or a history of mental illness, suicide attempt, or drug/alcohol addiction.

You should not get up too fast from a sitting or lying position to check a fall.

Do not take alcohol, caffeine pills, diet pills, or other stimulants (such as ADHD medications) without asking your doctor.

Drug Description

Symmetrel is elected generically as amantadine hydrochloride and chemically as 1-adamantanamine hydrochloride. The active component, amantadine hydrochloride is a steady white or almost white crystalline powder, liberally solvable in water and solvable in alcohol and in chloroform. Amantadine hydrochloride works as both an anti-Parkinson and an antiviral drug. This medication is offered in forms of tablets, capsules and syrup.

Each tablet has the following inactive ingredients such as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, sodium starch glycolate, and FD&C Yellow No. 6 etc.


Generic Symmetrel is used to prevent or treat certain influenza (flu) infections (type A). These capsules may be used alone or along with flu shots. It is not helpful for colds, other types of flu, or other virus infections.


This drug should not be given to patients with known hypersensitivity to amantadine hydrochloride or to any of the other elements in this medicine.

Dosage for the Flu

To treat or prevent the flu in adults, a dose of Symmetrel 100 mg has been recommended given as twice daily or 200 mg once daily. People age 65 years or older can take a lower dose (100 mg once daily).

A dose of 100 mg twice daily has been recommended for children age nine and older. The recommended dose for children ages one to eight depends on weight. It should be 2 mg to 4 mg per pound per day, not more than 150 mg per day. The dose of this drug will be different for other diseases like Parkinson's and drug-induced Extrapyramidal reactions.

Drug Interaction

Amantadine hydrochloride can probably interact with a number of other medications. Several of the medicines that may bring about drug interactions are Anticholinergic medications, such as Belladonna (Donnatal®, Bellamine S® and B&O Supprettes®), Atropine, Benztropine (Cogentin®), Clozapine (Clozaril®), Clidinium (Librax®), Darifenacin (Enablex ®), Diphenhydramine (Benadryl®, Tylenol PM®), Dicyclomine (Bentyl®), Glycopyrrolate (Robinul®), Homatropine (Hycodan®), Haloperidol (Haldol®), Hyoscyamine (Levsin®), Trospium (Sanctura®), Ipratropium (Atrovent®), Tiotropium (Spiriva®), Scopolamine (Transderm Scop ®) and Tolterodine (Detrol®) etc. besides other drugs may include antipsychotic medications ( schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders), Quinine or quinidine, Intranasal flu vaccine (FluMist™) and stimulants, including cocaine, ADHD medications, amphetamines, and various other medicines.

Side Effects

Adverse reactions are possible with Symmetrel® (amantadine hydrochloride). On the other hand, it doesn't mean that everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. If side effects do take place, in the majority cases, they are negligible and either necessitates no treatment or is easily treated. The most common troublesome side effects may comprise nausea, insomnia and dizziness or lightheadedness.

There are also other common side effects that may become troublesome such as loss of appetite, constipation, dry mouth, livedo reticularis, headaches, nervousness, drowsiness, unusual dreams, diarrhea, dry nose and fatigue etc.

Warning and Precaution

Congestive heart failure (CHF) may be worse or may occur by using Symmetrel. Discuss with your doctor before taking the medicine if you have CHF or swelling in the feet, hands, or ankles, as this can be a symbol of CHF.

Untreated acute angle-closure glaucoma (an eye condition) may become worse by using the drug.

Do not suddenly stop taking this drug if you have Parkinson's disease, otherwise serious problems could occur.

Symmetrel may enhance the hazard of seizures in people with epilepsy or seizure disorders. So it is advised to seek advice from your doctor before taking this drug if you have a history of seizures or epilepsy.
