Introduction

Atenolol belongs to a class of drugs called beta-blockers. It is called beta-adrenergic blocking agent. This drug blocks the action of certain natural chemicals in your body, for example epinephrine on the heart and blood vessels. It leads to a lowering of blood pressure, heart rate, and strain on the heart.

Indication

Atenolol is used for the treatment of angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure) caused by coronary atherosclerosis, acute MI. This medication is also applied to treat or check heart attack.

Dosage and Administration

To treat acute MI in adults, a dose of PO 100 mg/day is recommended for 6 to 9 days or until hospital discharge. In case of angina Pectoris, the dose is PO May require up to 200 mg/day. PO 50 to 100 mg/day is right dose for adults in hypertension. PO Initial dosage in elderly is 25 mg daily.

For treatment of renal function impairment, where CrCl 15 to 35 mL/min per 1.73 m 2, a 50 mg daily is recommended as max dose. If CrCl is less than 15 mL/min per 1.73 m 2, the max dose is 25 mg daily. The patient can be given 25 to 50 mg after each dialysis session in Hemodialysis.

Side Effects

The patient may grow dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, tiredness, diarrhea, nausea, unusual dreams, or vision problems while using this drug. He/she should inform about these effects, if they continue or worsen. It may also decrease blood flow to your hands and feet. There are some severe adverse effects that call for immediate medical care such as, very slow heartbeat, bluish discoloration of the fingers and toes, numbness or swelling of the hands or feet, decreased sexual desire, mental/mood changes, reversible hair loss, joint changes, cough, trouble breathing, unexplained or sudden weight gain, increased urination and increased thirst.

Drug Interactions

This drug is supposed not to be used with the following medications: mibefradil, anti-diabetic drugs (e.g., glyburide, glipizide, insulin), alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin), calcium channel blockers (e.g., diltiazem, verapamil), general anesthesia, epinephrine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., indomethacin, ibuprofen), other high blood pressure drugs (e.g., clonidine, reserpine), other heart drugs (e.g. quinidine, digoxin,).

Check the labels on all your medicines as they may hold ingredients that could enhance your heart rate or blood pressure. If you are presently using any of these drugs, tell your doctor or pharmacist before using this drug.

Warning and Precaution

Before using Atenolol, check with your doctor if you have: certain types of irregular heartbeats, cardiogenic shock, certain type of tumor, severe heart failure (overt or decompensated type), heart failure, diabetes, breathing problems (e.g., asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease), overactive thyroid disease (hyperthyroidism), kidney disease, skin conditions (e.g., psoriasis), any allergies or mental/mood disorders (e.g., depression).

Avoid sudden stop using Atenolol without first asking your doctor.

Before going for surgery, notify your doctor or dentist that you are taking this drug.

It may make you feel dizziness or drowsiness; apply caution doing activities needing alertness. Do not use alcoholic beverages. This drug should not be used during pregnancy.

Contraindications

Atenolol is contraindicated in patients having hypersensitivity to beta-blockers; greater than first-degree heart block; sinus bradycardia; overt cardiac failure; cardiogenic shock.

Storage

Store the drug at 68° to 77°F in a cool location.
