Dosage and Administration

For treatment of high blood pressure in adults, an initial dose of 120 to 240 milligrams once a day is recommended. The drug's effects appear after 2 weeks. The dose ranges from 120 to 540 milligrams. To treat angina, usual start is 120 to 180 milligrams once daily. The dose may be increased to 540 milligrams if needed. Use of this drug in children has not been recommended.

This drug can be taken with sublingual nitroglycerin to cancel acute anginal attacks as needed.

Prophylactic Nitrate Therapy can be continued while taking this medication.

Diltiazem hydrochloride can cause an additive antihypertensive effect when used with other antihypertensive agents. As a result, the dosage of either drug may need to be adjusted when used concurrently.

Avoid using this medicine if you have certain heart conditions like low blood pressure, "sick sinus syndrome" or "AV block" (unless you have a pacemaker), or a recent heart attack.

Before you use this medicine, let your doctor know if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have liver disease, kidney disease, or congestive heart failure.

Diltiazem can cause impairment of your thinking or reactions. Use caution if you drive or do anything that requires alertness. You must not stop using this drug without first asking your doctor. If you stop taking diltiazem suddenly, your condition may become worse.
