Timolol Maleate, is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent which is used to reduce internal pressure in the eye. All visual information is collected by the optic nerve and then it is transmitted to the brain. So, varying degrees of IOP elevation causes internal pressure in the eyes and damage to the optic nerve. It is an ophthalmic which is used together with other medications for the treatment of glaucoma. Timolol Maleate is a white colored crystalline powder having no odor and is soluble in water, methanol, and alcohol. It is available for ophthalmic use under the brand name of Generic Timoptic in the form of eye drops.

Drug Indications

Timolol Maleate ophthalmic eye drops are indicated for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma which is an optic nerve disease.

Dosage & Administration

You must follow the directions of your doctor given for using the Generic Timoptic ophthalmic solution. If you are using other medications for your eyes, then you must instill timolol eye drops after 10 minutes of using them. You must remove your contact lenses and instill the eye drops and should wear them only after 15 minutes of using the eye drops. The hole in the dispenser tip should not be enlarged because it has been designed to give the right amount of one drop. Do not wash the dispenser tip.

Wash your hands carefully before administering the eye drops. Smoothly pull your lower eyelid down so that it form a pocket after tilting your head back, hold the bottle after turning the bottle upside down. Place your thumb or index finger over the finger push area and press the bottle lightly. You can repeat the steps for the other eye.

Side Effects

The commonly seen side effects of the Generic Timoptic eye drops are headache, asthenia, fatigue, and chest pain along with blurred vision, cataract, conjunctival injection and decreased visual acuity.

Other sides effects, which were seen rarely but are very serious, are increase in signs and symptoms of myasthenia gravis, behavioral changes and psychic disturbances, insomnia, respiratory failure, cough and upper respiratory infections, ptosis, decreased corneal sensitivity,visual disturbances including refractive changes, diplopia, extremity pain, decreased exercise tolerance, weight loss, worsening of arterial insufficiency, vasodilatation, gastrointestinal pain, hepatomegaly, vomiting, mesenteric arterial thrombosis, ischemic colitis, decreased performance on neuropsychometrics, difficulties in urination.

Drug Interactions

Usage of Generic Timoptic with beta-adrenergic blocking agents should be kept under strict observation for potential additive effects of beta-blockade. The ophthalmic solution interacts with calcium antagonists giving way to atrioventricular conduction disturbances, left ventricular failure, and hypotension. It interacts with catecholamine-depleting drugs causing effects of hypotension.

Drug Contradictions

Patients with bronchial asthma, a history of bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease should be contradicted from using this drug. The usage of this drug is contradicted with patients suffering from sinus bradycardia, second or third degree atrioventricular block, overt cardiac failure, cardiogenic shock, or hypersensitivity to any component of this product. Patients being administered with quinine should not be administered with Generic Timoptic.
