Drug Description

Trihexiphenidyl is a synthetic antispasmodic. It comes in tablet form which contains 2 mg or 5 mg Trihexyphenidyl HCl, and inactive components such as Colloidal Silicon Dioxide, Magnesium Stearate, Corn Starch, Microcrystalline Cellulose and Anhydrous Lactose. Its active ingredient is a white or slightly off white, crystalline powder, with a very little faint odor. This drug repairs the chemical imbalance that leads to Parkinson's disease.

Indication

Trihexiphenidyl is used, together with other drugs, to treat Parkinson's disease, a brain disorder that brings about stiffness, muscle tremor, and weakness. It also controls certain side effects caused by antipsychotic drugs including Thorazine and Haldol.

Contraindication

Trihexiphenidyl is contraindicated in patients having known sensitiveness to it or an allergic reaction to it or to other antiparkinson drugs of this type.

Dosage

For appropriate dosage for you, consult with your doctor. The dosage information given here is common dosage information.

Parkinson's disease:

Patient with the above disease can take starting dose of 1 milligram on the first day. The dose may be increased by 2 milligrams at intervals of 3 to 5 days. For most people 6 to 10 milligrams is most effectual. The total daily dose should not go beyond 12 to 15 mg.

Drug-Induced Parkinsonism:

An initial dose of 1 milligram of trihexyphenidyl daily can be taken by patients. The total daily dosage should not be more than 15 milligrams.

Use of Trihexiphenidyl with Levodopa:

A lower dose for each drug is considered while taking trihexyphenidyl with Levodopa. Dose from 3 to 6 milligrams daily, divided into equal doses has been suggested.

Trihexyphenidyl Tablets and Liquid:

The total daily dose divided into 3 doses at mealtimes has been suggested as usual dosage. For patients taking high doses (more than 10 milligrams daily); the dose may be divided into 4 parts, to take 3 doses at mealtimes moreover the fourth at bedtime.

The drug may be taken either before meals or after meals.

Over Dosage

Overdosage may bring about delirium, agitation, hallucinations, disorientation, or psychotic episodes.

Side Effects

Some of the most common side effects caused by this drug are blurred vision; dilated pupils; constipation; dry mouth; lightheadedness; giddiness; loss of appetite; upset stomach; nausea; and vomiting. These side effects usually are likely to be mild. They possibly will fade away as your body adjusts to the medicine. If they continue, ask your doctor for help.

Drug Interaction

Use of this drug should be avoided with certain other drugs, as it may increase or decrease the effects of either. Some special drugs that must be informed to your doctor are amantadine (symmetrel), chlorpromazine (thorazine), amitriptyline (elavil), doxepin (sinequan) and haloperidol (haldol). If you need to take them, your doctor may advise dose adjustment.

Precaution

Before using this drug, the patient should inform to doctor the existence of some medical conditions if he has. He must inform doctor of glaucoma, muscle weakness (eg, myasthenia gravis), mental or mood disorders, urination problems or ulcerative colitis, (eg, an enlarged prostate), blockage of the stomach, or urinary tract; esophagus, kidney or liver problems; heart or blood vessel disease; high blood pressure; an irregular heartbeat; or unrestrained movements of the mouth, tongue or hands. Note

Trihexiphenidyl doesn't cure Parkinson's disease; it just reduces the occurrence of symptoms such as tremors.
