Drug Description

Valtrex (Valacyclovir) is an antiviral medication. This drug is prescribed to for the treatment of herpes zoster infections (shingles) or suppressing genital herpes in patients with normal immune systems. This is also used for cold sores (herpes simplex).

It holds back the expansion and increase of the herpes virus.

Points to Consider Before Taking Valtrex

It is necessary to talk to your healthcare professional before taking valacyclovir hydrochloride (Valtrex®) if you have HIV or AIDS, kidney disease or kidney failure, depression, immune system disorders, such as cancer, any allergies. Also tell him if you had a bone marrow or kidney transplant. Your healthcare provider must know if you are pregnant or want to become pregnant or breastfeeding.

Dosage and Administration

Generic Valtrex needs to be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. Start treatment with valtrex as soon as possible when you notice the first symptoms (e.g. for burning, cold sores-tingling, blisters). You may take it with or without food.

To treat cold sores (Herpes Labialis) in adults, dosage of 2 grams twice daily for 1 day taken 12 hours interval has been recommended. Initial genital herpes needs dosage of 1 gram twice daily for 10 days.

For treatment of recurrent genital herpes, dosage of 500 mg twice daily has been recommended for 3 days. Patients who have normal immune function treated for chronic suppressive of recurrent genital herpes can take 1 gram once daily. And patients with a history of 9 or fewer recurrences per year can take a substitute dose of 500 mg once daily.

In HIV-infected patients with a CD4+ cell count ≥ 100 cells/mm³, for chronic suppressive therapy of recurrent genital herpes can take 500 mg twice daily. For children the dose will be lower than that of elderly patients.

Side Effects

Side effects may happen by using this drug. If such happens, consult with your doctor. A few such side effects are difficulty breathing; swelling of the tongue, lips, or face; or hives, closing of the throat. Adverse effects that don't need medical help are tremors, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, or abdominal pain; headache; dizziness etc.

You may also develop any other side effects that have not been mentioned here.

Drug Interactions

Some drugs have been found that seriously interact with valtrex. Probenecid (Benemid) and cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB) are such drugs. If you are taking these medicines, your doctor may advise a dosage adjustment or regular checking during treatment.

There may be other medicines that may also interact with this drug. Hence you should talk to your health care provider before taking any prescribed or over-the-counter drugs.

Specific Warnings and Precautions

Valacyclovir should not be administered to people with badly functioning immune systems (other than people with HIV) such as cancer patients and people taking immune-suppressing tablets (such as after a transplant).

Valacyclovir may not be effectual if started after three days of appearing shingles or genital herpes or a cold sore. Valacyclovir does not heal genital herpes. Hence you must avoid sexual contact if you experience an occurrence. It is better to always use condoms, to avoid transmission of genital herpes to others.
