Introduction

Zestril belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. Its active ingredient, Lisinopril is a synthetic peptide derivative. The inactive ingredients are starch, calcium phosphate, mannitol, magnesium stearate, yellow ferric oxide. This drug blocks the angiotensin-converting enzyme, that causes blood vessels to narrow (constrict). This pill blocking the enzyme lowers blood pressure.

People with congestive heart failure can take starting dose of 5 mg once daily. It can be used along with diuretics and digoxin (such as Digitek ® and Lanoxin®) or digitoxin.

In patients having both heart failure and kidney disease, a lower dose of Zestril, such as 2.5 mg a day can be considered.

The patient can be administered a starting dose of 5 mg for survival after a heart attack. It can be followed by another 5 mg in 24 hours, and then 10 mg at 48 hours. This dose of 10 mg may then be continued for six weeks.
