Introduction:

By slowing the growth and spread of the herpes virus, the Acycolvir which is an antiviral drug helps the body to fight the infection. It simply reduces or lessens the symptoms of the infection but does not cure it. Acycolvir is a crystalline powder having a molecular formula of C8H11N5O3 and a molecular weight of 225, a solubility of 2.5 mg/mL in water at 37°C along with pKa's of 2.27 and 9.25. Under the brand name of Generic Zovirax, it is available in the form of capsules, tablets, cream and suspension.

Containing50 mg of acycolvir along with cetostearyl alcohol, mineral oil, poloxamer 407, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, water, and white petrolatum, the Generic Zovirax cream stops the viral replication and is used for treating the cold sores, caused by the herpes virus, on the face or lips.

Dosage:

Dosage should be as per the instructions of your doctor. But, generally, the Zovirax cream should administered 5 times in a day. The medication should be taken following the onset of signs and symptoms of the viral infection of herpes. The therapy should be continued for 4 days. The dosage is same for adolescents of 12 years of age and older.

Administration:

However, the Zovirax cream may be applied on the outside of the lips but it should not be applied in or near the eyes, or inside the nose or mouth. The cream should be applied with your fingers to clean, dry skin.

The following steps may be followed while administering the Acycolvir cream

  • At first your hands and affected area should be properly washed off and dried up. Take a small amount of the cream and apply it on the affected area gently massage it till it disappears into the skin. While applying the cream, you should be careful enough not to apply it on the surrounding area but on the affected area.
  • You should not wrap, cover or bandage the affected area until it has been so directed by your doctor.
  • After the immediate application of the cream, you should not go for a bath, swim or shower.
  • Use the Acyclic cream for the full period as prescribed by your doctor, even though you start feeling better in a few days, because that will help you to completely get rid of the infection.
  • For best results, the cream should be used at initial sign, which may include tingling, redness, itching, or bump, of a cold sore.
  • Use the cream as soon as possible, if you miss dose of a cream provided that it is not almost the same time for your next dose. Otherwise, you may skip your dose and stick to your regular table of dosing.
  • Do not forget to wash your hands properly with soap after the application of the cream.

Overdose

In case you have made over use of this cream, make contact with your health care professional without delay.

Missed Dose

If you seem to miss a dose, apply it immediately you remember. But you should not take double dose to make up the missed dose.

Possible Side Effects Of The Cream:

The commonly seen side effects associated with the Zovirax cream are burning or stinging, dry or cracked lips, flakiness or dryness of the skin and itching. Immediate medical attention should be sought for if the above said symptoms persist.

Drug Interaction

Zovirax cream can give rise to interaction if used with drugs, for example, phenytoin, tenofovir, and probenecid.

Why Should Acycolvir Not Be Prescribed?

Persons or individuals who are sensitive to or have developed any kind allergy towards Zovirax or similar drugs should not be prescribed with it.
