Furosemide is a loop diuretic that helps the kidneys to eliminate larger amounts of electrolytes (especially sodium and potassium salts) and water than normal. A loop diuretic is helpful in treating many conditions in which salt and water retention is a problem. People with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or a kidney disorder may be prescribed with Furosemide which is a white to off-white odorless crystalline powder with a freely solubility with dilute alkali solutions and sparing solubility with alcohol. Traded under the name of Generic Lasix, it is available in the form of tablets for oral administration.

Generic Lasix tablets are indicated for pulmonary edema and hypertention. When the alveoli is filled up with excess fluid seeped out of the blood vessels in the lung instead of air, pulmonary edema is caused, which results in breathing difficulty and poor oxygenation of blood. Hypertensive patients are given treatment with these tablets along with other antihypertensive agents.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage of Furosemide tablets vary from person to person depending on the type of disease it is being used and the health condition of the patient.

For Patients Suffering From Edema

Adults suffering from edema should be a prescribed with a single dose of 20 to 80 mg per day. The dose may be increased by 20 or 40 mg and should be given at an interval of 6 to 8 hours, as a second dose, until the desired diuretic effect has been obtained. Patients with clinically severe edematous states may be a given doses titrated up to 600 mg/day in divided doses. Careful clinical observation and laboratory monitoring are advisable in cases where doses exceed 80 mg/day and have been taken for a long period.

Pediatric Patients

Pediatric patients should be given a starting dose of 2 mg/kg body weight as a single dose. The dosage may be increased by1 or 2 mg/kg and should be given only after 6 to 8 hours from the previous dose. Pediatric patients should not be given a dosage of 6 mg/kg body weight in a day.

For Patients Suffering From Hypertension

For hypertention, the usual adult dosage is 80 mg per day which should be given in divided doses of two. If satisfactory response is not seen, then additional antihypertensive agents may be employed, but fluctuation in blood pressure must be monitored.

Side Effects

The common side effects associated with Lasix tablets are diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, interstitial nephritis, necrotizing angiitis, vertigo, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, xanthopsia, hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, anemia, urticaria, rash, pruritus, weakness, restlessness, urinary bladder spasm, thrombophlebitis, and fever. Persistence of any of the above mentioned side effects or any other unusual health symptom should be immediately informed to your doctor and steps for recovery should be taken.

Drug Interactions

Ethacrynic acid and aminoglycoside antibiotics result in ototoxicity if taken along with Lasix tablets. Furosemide antagonizes the effect of tubocurarine and potentiates the action of succinylcholine. By reducing lithiums' renal clearance, it leads to lithium toxicity. So, before consuming the above mention drugs along with these tablets a consultation with a doctor regarding the same is advisable.

Patients with anuria and individuals having a history of hypersensitivity to Furosemide or any other component of Lasix tablets are contradicted from taking this drug.

These tablets should be dispensed in well-closed, light-resistant containers and should be stored at excursions permitted temperature which ranges from15 - 30° C. Keep the medicine away from the reach of children and pets.
