Drug Description

Viagra is primarily indicated to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. This drug is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor that enhances blood flow into the penis during sexual stimulation. Consequently, the patient can attain and uphold an erection.

Contraindication

Viagra is contraindicated in patients with any heart disease or having allergy to any factor in this drug. This treatment also can't be recommended if the patient is taking certain other drugs such as, nitrates (eg, nitroglycerin and isosorbide) in any form, nitroprusside, recreational drugs called "poppers" (eg, butyl nitrate or nitrite, amyl nitrate) or another PDE5 inhibitor (such as, vardenafil or tadalafil).

Dosage and Administration

Viagra has to be used according to your doctor's instruction.

This drug is generally taken only when required 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual intercourse. But, it may be used up to 4 hours before sexual intercourse. It must not be used above once per day.

This drug can be taken by mouth with or with no food. Never take it with a high-fat meal.

Side Effects

Side effects occur by using almost all medicines but many people experience no or small side effects. Use of Viagra may also lead to certain side effects from which most common are flushing; diarrhea; headache; upset stomach heartburn; dizziness; stuffy nose.

However, harsh side effects can't also be denied. These effects which may need immediate medical help are sudden decrease or loss of hearing; severe allergic reactions; fainting; chest pain; fast or irregular heartbeat; numbness of an arm or leg; memory loss; one-sided weakness; ringing in the ears; painful or prolonged erection; seizure; severe or persistent vision changes; severe or persistent dizziness.

Drug Interaction

Viagra should not be taken withy several drugs. Otherwise, it may invite serious health problems. Before start treatment with it, the patient must report to his doctor he is taking any other medications, chiefly: alpha-blockers (eg, doxazosin), nitrates (eg, nitroglycerin, isosorbide), medications for high blood pressure, telithromycin, nitroprusside, h3 antagonists (eg, cimetidine), azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole), macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir, saquinavir), narcotic analgesics (eg, dihydrocodeine), or bosentan or rifampin.

Precaution

Before start treatment with Viagra, the patient is required to notify his doctor about any medical conditions he has or had in the past such as blood cell problems, a deformed penis, or a prolonged erection (priapism), a past record of certain eye problems or hearing problems, liver or kidney problems, high or low blood pressure, lung problems, ulcers, heart problems, bleeding problems, or blood vessel problems or heart attack, a life-threatening irregular heartbeat, stroke.

Viagra may cause lightheadedness, or fainting. To stop such effects, sit up or stand gradually, mainly in the morning.

Use of this drug may lead to a prolonged or painful erection. This condition should be immediately brought to the notice of your doctor if it persists more than 4 hours.

This drug doesn't help prevent spread of HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases to others by sexual contact. Utilize another technique of birth control (such as, condoms) in case you have any sexual diseases.

This ED drug should not be used along with other ED drugs without first asking your doctor.

Use it with care if you are an elderly patient. Children and women should not take it.
