Colloidal Bismuth performs many works in the gut. It builds a layer over ulcers in the stomach and gut. It thus prevents stomach acid to make any further damage and helps for soon healing. It also destroys bacteria which can make ulcers worse. This drug enhances the synthesis of prostoglandin E, develops the emission of bicarbonate, and accelerates the action of the cells defensive mechanisms. It boosts the strength of mucous membrane in digestive system to the accomplishment of pepsin, ferments, hydrochloric acid, and salts of the bilious acids. It also reduces the activity of pepsin and pepsinogen.

Indications


Colloidal Bismuth is used or the treatment of duodenal ulcers, diarrhea, chronic gastritis, and upset stomach along with symptoms like stomach pain, nausea, burning, and excess gas (dyspepsia).

Contraindications

This drug is contraindicated in patients with renal insufficiency or any kind of allergy to any of Bismuth salts.

Dosages:

Colloidal Bismuth is meant for oral administration. A dose of 120mg qid OR 240mg bid has been recommended as usual dose. This drug can be taken before meals for 4-8 weeks. Your doctor may reduce the therapy to 2 weeks in case of Triple Drug schedule.

Interactions:

Before beginning treatment with this medicine, the patients need to inform the doctor or pharmacist if they are taking any drug, counting those without a prescription and medications. Likewise, ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medication while being treated with this medication, to make sure it will not cause any interaction.
Don't take antacids like Tums (R), famotidine Pepcid(R), cimetidine Tagamet (R), and ranitidine Zantac(R) simultaneously with this drug. Avoid taking this drug Bismuth Subcitrate with milk or food. You should take it 30 minutes prior to or 2 hours after meals.

Adverse Reactions:

Medicines can affect life of people by causing a variety of possible side effects. Some of the adverse reactions that are known to be caused by using this drug are headaches, confusion, dizziness, ataxia and seizures. Also a person may experience black stool and a black colored tongue. Using it for a long period may lead to Bismuth toxicity (Nephrotoxicity/ Hepatotoxicity, Fatal Encephalopathy, & Osteodystrophy). Since a side effect is declared here, it does not denote that all people using this drug will suffer that or any side effect. Apart from it also bear in mind that all the possible adverse reactions have not been described here.


Warning and cautions:

It is vital for a patient to talk with physician prior to taking Colloidal Bismuth if he/she has any other health problems, such as gout, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or blood vessel disease or liver or kidney problems. The patient must also tell if plans to be pregnant or is pregnant while using this drug or breastfeeding. Use of this drug may cause discoloration of the stools, but this is risk-free. Don't use these pills more than 8 weeks. You should also avoid taking other pills, containing Bismuth while on treatment with the drug. A higher dose may cause hallucinations, confusion, changes in memory and mood, or seizures. Caution is needed in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
