Desogestrel is a synthetic progestogen, like the natural progestogens produced by the body. It is used as a contraceptive that primarily prevents the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation). This tablet contains desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol, and inactive ingredients such as vitamin E, povidone, corn starch, stearic acid, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, colloidal silicon dioxide, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, lactose, and talc.

Dose Information

Take tablet every day on a continuous basis including when you are having a period. Start taking this pill on the first day of your period. This will defend you from pregnancy right away and you won't require using any extra methods of contraception. If needed, you can also start taking it up to day five of your cycle without using additional contraception when you start.

This tablet needs to be taken by mouth. Take this pill with food to reduce nausea. Pursue the directions on the prescription label. Take these tablets at the same time every day. It should not be taken more often than instructed.

Precaution before Taking Generic Desogestrel

The patient must inform his doctor about all the medical conditions especially the following: liver, endometrial, breast, cervical, ovarian, or uterine cancer, abnormal vaginal bleeding, diabetes, blood vessel disease or blood clots, heart disease, tobacco smoker, recent heart attack, gallbladder disease, liver disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, high cholesterol, stroke, migraine headaches, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), allergic reaction to progestin, estrogens, other medicines, pregnant or wish to get pregnant and breast-feeding.

Precaution While Using Desogestrel

Make a regular breast and pelvic exam and Pap smear while using this drug. Use an added method of contraception. Abstain from smoking while you are taking birth control pills. This medicine can swell hands, fingers, or ankles. Contact your health care provider if you feel you are retaining fluid. Keep away from being in the sun, put on protective clothing and use sunscreen. You should not use sun lamps or tanning beds/booths. Apply caution while administering those with arterial disease, a previous ectopic pregnancy, a previous thrombosis, previous jaundice, epilepsy, tuberculosis, diabetes, or chloasma (yellowish-brown pigmentation patches on the skin, particularly on the face).

Side Effects

Use of this drug may cause many side effects. Report to your health care provider as soon as possible if you experience side effects such as: yellowing of the eyes or skin, vomiting, weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, especially on one side of the body, speech problems, tenderness in the upper abdomen, chest pain, vaginal infection like irritation, itching, or unusual discharge, severe or sudden headaches, coughing up blood, dizziness or fainting spells, headaches or migraines.

Drug Interaction

A number of drugs may interact with Desogestrel if taken together. A few of these drugs are : antibiotics or medicines for infections, acetaminophen, aprepitant, atorvastatin, barbiturate medicines, bosentan, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), carbamazepine, clofibrate, cyclosporine, caffeine, dantrolene, felbamate, grapefruit juice, doxercalciferol, hydrocortisone, medicines for diabetes, diazepam or temazepam, mineral oil, nefazodone, modafinil, mycophenolate, phenytoin and oxcarbazepine.

Desogestrel is contraindicated in pregnant women, those with a current thrombosis, severe liver problems and/or jaundice, severe arterial disease, vaginal bleeding, a blood disorder called acute porphyria, or in certain types of cancer.


Store Desogestrel at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F).
