Drug Description

Arcoxia tablets possess non-steroidal anti-inflammatory property. Etoricoxib is an active ingredient in this drug. This medicine falls under the category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). NSAIDs block the work of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase. Cyclo-oxygenase is responsible for producing prostaglandins caused by injury or certain diseases. These prostaglandins cause swelling, pain, and inflammation. This drug blocks the construction of these prostaglandins and thus relieves pain and inflammation.

Indication

Arcoxia tablets are indicated to treat acute gout, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Contraindication

It is contraindicated in children and adolescents less than 16 years of age, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, patients having severely decreased liver function, heart failure, and moderate to severely decreased kidney function.

This tablet should not be given to people in whom aspirin or other NSAIDs, eg ibuprofen, cause allergic reactions for example asthma attacks, nasal polyps, itchy rash (urticaria), nasal inflammation (rhinitis) or swelling of the tongue, lips, and throat (angioedema).

Etoricoxib is contraindicated in some patients with active peptic ulcer or bleeding from the gut, uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension), inflammatory bowel disease like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis,

This medicine also should be avoided in patients having heart disease, eg angina or history of heart attack, cerebrovascular disease), eg history of stroke or peripheral arterial disease or in rare hereditary problems of the Lapp lactase deficiency or galactose intolerance.

Side effects

Medicines usually have many possible side effects. Some of the adverse effects those are associated with Arcoxia are mild and some are serious as well. Among common adverse effects, a few are oedema, dizziness, high blood pressure (hypertension), headache, or awareness of your heartbeat (palpitations), feeling weak or fatigued, disturbances of the gut such as nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion, or abdominal pain.

There are some adverse effects that rarely occur such as Anxiety or depression, weight gain, Change in taste, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), tingling sensations, Nosebleeds (epistaxis), Blurred vision, Cough or shortness of breath (dyspnoea), Muscle cramps, Skin reactions such as rash and itch, Heart failure, or Chest pain.

All the adverse effects listed above may not occur. A patient may or may not experience these effects. To explore more information about any other potential risks caused by this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Drug Interaction

Inform your physician or pharmacist about any medicines you are already taking, including non-prescription and herbal medicines, before taking this drug. Your doctor can say if the combination of drugs is safe.

Avoid taking Arcoxia with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), eg diclofenac, ibuprofen, as using more than one NSAID simultaneously may also enhance the possibility of side effects on the gut.

Drugs that should not be taken with Arcoxia are ACE inhibitors, eg enalapril, captopril, ciclosporin, angiotensin II antagonists, eg losartan, tacrolimus, diuretics. Other drugs need close monitoring if taken with this medicine. These drugs are lithium, methotrexate, oestrogens in oral contraceptives or HRT, rifampicin and digoxin etc.

Precaution

Caution is needed while administering Arcoxia to elderly people, decreased kidney function, diabetes, decreased liver function, dehydration, liver cirrhosis and high blood pressure (hypertension).

This drug should not be used in patients with history of stomach or intestines disorders, for example ulceration or bleeding, history of heart failure or allergies to medicines, swelling due to excess fluid retention (oedema), high levels of fats such as cholesterol in the blood (hyperlipidaemia) or smokers.
