Drug Descriptions

Alfacalcidiol is a derivative of vitamin D3, a fat soluble sterol. It is sometimes measured to be hormone or hormone originator. It promotes normal bone development in body by adapting phosphorus, calcium and minerals. This element is also found in certain foods like fish liver oils. This is made by total or partial chemical synthesis. This drug is not offered in any combination preparation.

Indication

Alfacalcidol is primarily indicated for treatment of Neonatal hypocalcemia, Osteomalacia in malabsorption syndrome, Oncogenic hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, Osteoporosis, Renal osteodystrophy, Parathyroid bone disease, Renal tubular osteomalacia, Sporadic hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, Rickets in premature infants, Uremic osteodystrophy, Vitamin D-dependent rickets, Vitamin D therapy in patients with severe renal impairment, X-linked hypophosphataemic osteomalacia.

Dosage

For adult the approved dose is 0.250 to 1.000 mcg/kg for maintenance. But the initial dose is 1.000 mcg. In pediatric patients, the dosage (20 Kg.) is 0.050 mcg/kg. The neonatal dosage ( 3 Kg. ) has been suggested up 0.15 mg to 0.050 mg/kg.

Adverse Effects

The severe adverse effects caused by Alfacalcidol, which cause further complications, may include CNS depression, Hypercalcemia, Hypercalciuria, Urinary calcium stone formation. This drug generates potentially life-threatening effects which include Coma. If such happens, discontinue the treatment.

Before Using Alfacalcidol

Before using the drug, discuss your medical history with your health care provider. Talk about if you have allergic reactions and adverse drug interactions. Unlike other drugs, but, Alfacalcidol should be observed for pregnant and nursing women. For expecting and lactating women to bear healthy children, the approved maximum amount of Vitamin D is very necessary.

Drug Interaction

Alfacalcidol may have adverse reaction if used with other drugs like Cholestyramine, Aluminium Hydroxide and Oxide, Colestipol (HCl), Danazol, Cortisone (Acetate), Digoxin, Phenytoin (Na) and Phenobarbitone. These reactions sometimes prove to be helpful and sometimes may prove to be harmful to life. Always discuss with your doctor for the change of dose schedule or an alternative drug of choice that may severely be essential.

Contraindication

Alfacalcidol is contraindicated in patients having hypercalcaemia.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not administer Alfacalcidol to patients having hypercalcaemia. You must apply extreme caution while administering it to children, because they may be more sensitive to its effects. This drug also should be administered with care in patients who suffer from or calculi, renal impairment or heart disease. It is essential to control plasma phosphate level during vitamin D treatment. You should also apply caution during pregnancy. Even if the drug is generally used as a dietary supplement, don’t overdose on it. Take this drug at the required dosage as approved by your doctor constantly. Our body holds Vitamin D. As a result, if you take it more than what your boy needs, it may give rise to a buildup and bring about poisoning.
