Sucralfate is a gastric protective. It straightforwardly restrains pepsin, an enzyme that breaks apart proteins in the existence of stomach acid. It sticks to the surface of ulcers (attaching to bare proteins) and covers the ulcer. As a result the ulcer surface is protected somewhat from further damage by acid and pepsin.

Sucralfate is used to treat peptic ulcer disease and to avoid periodic ulcers after curing of the ulcer. This drug is also applied to alleviate or check the ulcers associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Sucralfate also is applied in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients who have high risk to get ulcers in the esophagus and to avoid ulcers caused by high level of physical stress such as surgery, extensive burns, and overwhelming infection.

Dosage and Administration

To treat active duodenal ulcer, an adult oral dosage of 1 g has been recommended four times per day on an empty stomach.

Antacids may be taken for relief of pain but should be avoided within one-half hour earlier than or after Sucralfate.

An adult oral dosage of 1 g twice a day has been recommended for maintenance dose.
