Drug Description

Florinef Acetate tablet holds fludrocortisone acetate which is a synthetic adrenocortical steroid having very potent mineralocorticoid properties and high glucocorticoid activity. Fludrocortisone is a corticosteroid. It causes the kidneys to retain sodium and replaces cortisone when the body does not produce sufficient. This tablet has inactive ingredients such as sodium benzoate, calcium phosphate, lactose, corn starch, magnesium stearate, and talc.

Drug Indications

Florinef Generic is indicated for treatment of adrenocortical insufficiency in Addison disease. It also treats salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome.

Drug Contraindications

Florinef Generic is contraindicated in patients having allergy to any ingredient in Fludrocortisone or having a systemic fungal infection. This tablet also should not be taken if you have to take a smallpox vaccination.

Dosage & Administration

Dosage may vary according to the severity of the disease and the response of the patient.

Addison's Disease

In Addison's disease, a dose of 0.1 mg has been recommended as usual dose. If temporary hypertension develops as a result of therapy, the dose should be decreased to 0.05 mg daily. Florinef Acetate is preferably used together with cortisone (10 mg to 37.5 mg daily in divided doses) or hydrocortisone (10 mg to 30 mg daily in divided doses).

Salt-Losing Adrenogenital Syndrome

A usual dosage of 0.1 mg to 0.2 mg daily for treating the salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome has been recommended.

Safety Note

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, particularly bleeding problems, a history of an underactive thyroid, heart problems or heart attack, liver or kidney problems, diabetes, inflammation of the esophagus, high blood pressure, stomach problems (e.g., ulcers), bowel blockage or other bowel problems (e.g., ulcerative colitis), myasthenia gravis, recent bowel surgery, or mental or mood problems.

Also you must tell your physician if you have chickenpox, measles, herpes infection of the eye, or any other type of bacterial, parasitic, fungal, or viral infection, recently had tuberculosis (TB) or have had a positive skin test for TB. Also tell him if you are planned for a vaccination (e.g., smallpox).

Drug Interactions

There are lists of drugs that cause interaction with Fludrocortisone. Tell your physician before you use any other drugs, especially: anabolic steroids (e.g., oxymetholone) or aprepitant; anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) or aspirin; barbiturates (e.g., phenobarbital), rifampin, carbamazepine, estrogens, or hydantoins (e.g., phenytoin); amphotericin B, troleandomycin, azole antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole), clarithromycin, digoxin, steroidal contraceptives (e.g., desogestrel), loop diuretics (e.g., furosemide), thiazide diuretics (e.g., hydrochlorothiazide), methotrexate or ritodrine, Hydantoins (e.g., phenytoin), live vaccines, or smallpox vaccine.

Side Effects

Like any other drugs, this drug may lead to many side effects. Most common side effects that you should report to your physician may comprise dizziness or lightheadedness; difficulty sleeping; headache; increased sweating; increased appetite; indigestion; nervousness.

Some serious side effects caused by this drug may need immediate medical attention such as severe allergic reactions, black, changes in menstrual periods; tarry stools; eye pain, chest pain; or increased pressure in the eye; trouble sleeping; fever, chills, muscle pain or weakness; or sore throat; mood or mental changes (e.g., depression); joint or bone pain; seizures; severe or persistent headache; vision changes.

Warning and Precautions

Your doctor should check your progress at regular visits to make sure this medicine does not cause unwanted effects. If you will be using this medicine for a long time, your doctor may want you to carry a medical identification card stating that you are using this medicine. While you are taking fludrocortisone, be careful to limit the amount of alcohol you drink.
