Pantoprazole sodium is a medicinal drug applied to treat and manage gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other abnormal physical conditions associated with stomach acid. Pantoprazole is arranged into a family of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), and is obtainable under the trade name Protonix which is produced by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It inhibits the activity of a particular enzyme in the stomach wall that releases acid.

Mode of Action

In aching burning sensation in the chest (pyrosis) and GERD, stomach acid flows upwards into the esophagus since a muscle at the ending of the esophagus does not close down in the right manner. Consuming Protonix (Pantoprazole) permits any acid-stimulated harm in the throat to cure. In addition, individuals with ulcers in the stomach or intestines derive benefit from using Pantoprazole as reduced stomach acid allows those ulcers to nurse back to health. The medicine is advantageous as well for addressing medical problems that give rise to extreme generation of stomach acid, for instance Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Drug Indications

Protonix is primarily indicated to deal with corrosive acid reflux problem, which is also identified as corrosive GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). GERD is a state wherein acid of the stomach and, occasionally, bile (a digestive juice secreted by the liver) travel backward into the esophagus.

Various Drug Forms

Protonix is supplied in the form of delayed-release pills and as an intravenous (IV) solution received within a vein. The IV variety is intended for short-range intervention of 7 to 10 days for individuals who are unable to take the drug by mouth. The pills must not be squashed or chewed, for the reason that the delayed release formula lets the medication to be absorbed by the small intestine that makes sure the receipt of utmost benefit.

Most Expected Side Effects

Protonix (Pantoprazole) side effects are rare, and users normally go through more harmful effects when resorting to the IV solution. Effects relating to the stomach and intestines include pain in the abdomen, ejecting gas noisily from the stomach through the mouth (burping), constipation or looseness of the bowels, gas, dyspepsia, nausea and vomiting. Other probable side effects contain nervousness, back or joint ache, coughing, lightheadedness, weariness, headache and incapability to sleep.

Severe Side Effects

More dangerous but rare side effects necessitate emergency medical aid, and an individual receiving these effects may not be in a position to use Pantoprazole. These include inflammation of the membranes coating the bronchial tubes (bronchitis), amplified liver enzymes and elevated blood sugar. Pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, can also come out and may turn out to be chronic. Pantoprazole may diminish the concentration of the medication Ketoconazole and add to the concentration of the medicine Digoxin (brand name Lanoxin).

Drug Warnings

On the odd occasion, patients taking Pantoprazole have encountered a life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction inducing an intense skin rash and flaking skin. An allergic reaction can lead to trouble taking a breath and getting down, or facial and throat puffing up as well.
