Introduction:

Being a low-molecular-weight heparin, Parnaparin has established its efficacy and safety in preventing venous thromboembolism. The drug is usually available in the form of injections and is usually administered subcutaneously by means of once-daily regimen. The drug is helpful in treating chronic venous disorders and venous and arterial thrombosis by letting the body to create its natural clot lysis mechanisms for breaking down clots that have already formed. It even prevents formation of blood clots. It accelerates the activity of antithrombin III and binds to it, resulting in an increase inhibition of Xa and IIa, which are the coagulation factors.

Indication:

Parnaparin Injection is intended for preventing the venous thromboembolic disease. It is also used for the treatment of patients with deep-vein thrombosis, chronic venous disease, peripheral arterial occlusive disease and acute coronary syndromes.

Dosage and Administration:

Parnaparin is given at different dosage, depending on the type and the severity of the disease. Patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency, arterial hypertension, or any organ lesion subject to bleeding should be carefully administered with the drug. The best dosage can be advised by your doctor. Take the medicine exactly as it is directed by your physician and only for the period for which it has been prescribed for you by your doctor.

Side Effects:

The most important side effect of Parnaparin injection is bleeding which is associated with any low molecular weight heparin.

The bleeding is again categorized as major and minor bleeding. Bleeding at the injection site is referred to as minor bleeding where as heavy loss of blood due to overt hemorrhage associated with hemoglobin drop of at least 2 g/L is regarded as major bleeding. Major bleeding takes into account the blood loss associated with hemoglobin drop which requires the transfusion of 2 or more units of packed red-blood cells or the hemoglobin drop in the bleeding at life-threatening sites, like retroperitonal or intracranial events, or the bleeding which requires re-intervention. Side effects should be immediately informed to your doctor.

No other side effects of the drug have been observed.

Drug Interaction:

Parnaparin is interactive with some drugs. So, it is necessary to make the necessary changes in dosages so that drug interaction can be kept to the minimum. Seek advice from your doctor about the same. Inform your doctor about all the medicines which you were taking and are going to take along with this drug. Your doctor should be informed about your pregnancy, if you are pregnant. Let him know if you are a feeding mother or if you have any plans to be pregnant.

Drugs like warfarin, aspirin, dipyridamole, hydroxychloroquine, demeclocycline and minocycline are interactive with heparins and should be carefully administered.

Nicotine cigarettes should be avoided.

Contraindications:

Parnaparin should not be used in individuals suffering from severe thrombocytopenia or with those who cannot be performed at appropriate intervals for their coagulation parameters. Individuals with uncontrollable active bleeding state are also contradicted from using these tablets but bleeding caused due to disseminated intravascular coagulation is an exception.
