Sucralfate Suspension for oral use holds 1 g of sucralfate per 10 mL.

Other factors in this solution are FD&C Red No. 40, colloidal silicon dioxide NF, flavor, methylcellulose USP, glycerin USP, methylparaben NF, purified water USP, microcrystalline cellulose NF, simethicone USP, and sorbitol solution USP.

Indication

Sucralfate Suspension helps for treatment and prevention of ulcers. It also has other uses.

This oral solution is a gastric protective. It operates by creating a defensive layer on the ulcer to act as a wall against bile salts, acid, and enzymes in the stomach.

Contraindication

Sucralfate Suspension should not be applied in patients with allergic to any ingredient in Sucralfate Suspension,

Dosage and Administration

An oral dosage of 1 g (10 mL/2 teaspoonfuls) four times per day has been recommended for adult. It should be taken on an empty stomach.

Antacids may be taken to relieve pain but it must not be taken within one-half hour before or after this oral solution.

It may take a week or two to cure the disease but treatment need to be continued for 4 to 8 weeks unless healing has been proved by x-ray or endoscopic examination.

Caution is needed while administering this oral drug to an elderly patient. They may start a lower dose.

Drug Contraindication

Like any other medication, Sucralfate Suspension may also have serious drug interactions. Hence the patient must acquaint his health care professional before raking any of these medicines, especially: citrate salts or pills that have aluminum, in particular in patients who have kidney disease. Other drug interactions may also occur. Find out those drugs by asking your doctor about them. Seek advice from your doctor prior to starting, stopping, or modifying the dose of any pills.

Side Effects

Side effects are common with any medications. So is the case with this oral suspension while many have experienced no, or minor, side effects. Some of the common adverse effects that may occur are constipation; feeling of a whirling motion; dizziness. It may also give rise to some severe allergic reactions like rash; itching; hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of the mouth, lips, face, or tongue; tightness in the chest.

The patient may develop other adverse reactions that have not been listed here. Consult with your physician if you experience any of these or other such effects.

Precaution

Before using Sucralfate Suspension, inform your doctor about all medial condition you have or had. Among this we can include kidney problems, pregnancy, planning to become pregnant, or breast-feeding, difficulty swallowing or blockage of the intestines.

This drug may lead to dizziness. Alcohol or certain medicines may aggravate these effects. So don't take them while being treated. You should avoid driving or carrying out other possibly hazardous tasks until you know its effect on you. Sucralfate Suspension holds aluminum in it. Before using any new pills, read the label to ensure if it contains aluminum in it. Use it with extreme caution in children; safety and usefulness in children have not been clear.
